About Lucas' Papaw Ointment Lip Balm
More than 100 years ago, Aussie doctor Thomas Lucas started making homeopathic remedies using the antibacterial, antimicrobial papaw fruit (aka Carica papaya)—this is one of his original products. It can do almost anything, from protecting skin against the elements and healing chapped lips and cuticles to diminishing blemishes and relieving eczema. And it’s also beloved by makeup artists, who keep a tube in their kits to use as a subtle highlighter or to add sheen lashes and brows.
In an interview with Brisbane Times, Kevin Talbot, fourth-generation Lucas manufacturer, said, “Lucas’ Papaw has more than a cult following now; everyone wants it.” Rose Byrne, Miranda Kerr, and Cate Blanchett all swear by it. “It just works,” said Talbot.
The ingredients include fermented papaw fruit and pharmaceutical-grade petroleum (a milder and non-comedogenic form of the petroleum found in, say, Vaseline). The consistency is similar to most petroleum products, with a slightly milky smell that’s not at all unpleasant.
Why It’s Special
- The ointment temporarily relieves the symptoms of dermatitis and eczema.
- The ointment has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and can be used as a local topical application on the following: minor burns & scalds, sunburn, gravel rash, cuts & minor open wounds, nappy rash & chafing, splinters & thorns, and insect bites.
Key Ingredients
- Carica Papaya 39 mg Fresh Fermented Fruit: The papaya is grown fresh in Queensland and is hand-selected to be fermented to make the ointment. The finished product contains 0.1 mg/g of Potassium Sorbate which acts as a preservative.
- Pharmaceutical Grade Petroleum Jelly and Wax: It is a pharmaceutical grade base that is tested and screened for the level of total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Penreco USP grade Petrolatums are not mutagenic or toxic to reproduction.

it does everything
I bought this based on the strength of the reviews here on Beautylish, and I don't think now I could live without it. First and foremost I use it as a lip balm overnight, and it leaves my lips soft and smooth by morning
Then I started using it on cat scratches and other small skin issues, and they healed beautifully. It even took care of some dry skin I had on my feet.
Today it's soothing my allergy tortured nose. There's no real smell, and it's not greasy. It's perfect.
I can't recommend this product highly enough. It literally has tons of uses. I'm in love with it.

I bought this product based off all the great reviews. Now that I have the product I don't think it's really worth the hype. It's nice on your lips but not as effective as other lip products and I've used it on a few mosquito bites to relieve itching and it helped for about 5-10 minutes. Cortisone cream is much more effective on bug bites in my opinion.

I really like to slather this stuff on my lips before bed because I have terribly chapped lips from biting them and licking them too much, and I always wake up with stupidly soft, flake-free lips. Also, I love adding a bit of shine to my eyelids (especially over a smudgey black liner look) and it's pretty perfect for that because it doesn't make my super sensitive eyes react in any way. I have sensitive skin overall, and I really like that it doesn't break me out or clog my pores while also being very moisturizing. It's also kind of a lifesaver on my eczema patches on my neck and nose.

im happy to see that it has finally come to beautylish. ive been using it for over 6 or 7 years now. I keep one in every room of my house, a few in various purses, my cars, locker at work and gym, I keep 5 in my office desk (for some reason it keeps disappearing) this is totally a wonder ointment. I buy mine in bulk From Australia since I dont trust amazon or ebay when it comes to this stuff.

It cures mosquitoes bite literally. Those itchiness were gone after A minute, you won't feel itchy and the bump is gone! I love it Soo much and it's also my enhancer for my brows it makes it look shinny and healthy. Besides, it works really good for my dry and cracked lips. It also works out for my acne problems such as when I have a swollen bump on my face, where it feels painful, just apply papaw the bump will be gone! It's a miracle tube

I first heard ab this product while watching an adorable MUA (krystletips) on Youtube. She was raving ab how great it was & w/me having tried every lip concoction possible--I was desperate 2 give it a shot! Long story short, I am on a medicine that makes my mouth, lips, & other body parts excessively dry---so my lips r an ongoing problem 4 me. Excessively dry, constantly cracking, even bleeding at times & painful. I've tried everything imaginable (Jack Black lip balm, Blistex, Carmex, EOS, LUSH lip balm, & the list goes on)...all unsuccessful 4 me. So u can imagine my surprise when the MUA was talking ab this lip wonder--only 2 b found in Australia--but then days later--it popped up as available on Beautylish!!! I was ecstatic & immediately ordered a huge jar. Weeks later I am happy 2 report that not only has this helped my lips tremendously, but it also heals open sores rapidly!! My sores take 4ever 2 heal (sorry, TMI) but in using Papaw several times---I would wake up the very next morning & the sore would already b closed up & mostly healed. I knew I had a goldmine then!! I do want 2 add that 4 my lips tho--I do use a lip exfoliator (Lush Lip Scrub) & then follow it immediately w/the Papaw ointment. The combination of these 2 2gether have made my lips a pleasure when applying lipstick again! No more disgusting pealing, flaky skin!! Overjoyed!! They look & feel like 'real' lips once again!

Having read some about this 'secret of the beauty professionals in Australia' for some time, I found one from Aden And Anais - Mum + Bub Ointment--works well, but smells strongly like 'cupcakes', or something sweet. I bought it for a patch of skin on my son's chin, and it helped it immensely. (He can't stand the smell of it...would run from me if he saw the tube!) A friend gifted me the Lucas' Papaw Ointment she brought back from Australia. Much more neutral smell (that is a positive), and it absorbs very well. I've used it for a scar where I had some skin shaved, and it took the 'itch' away. Works well on lips, hands, feet and especially cuticles.
I particularly like the description of this product on another well know website. Here is just some of what was written: "Lucas Papaw Ointment cleans away infectious wastes.... The ointment is approved by the Australian Government Therapeutic Goods Administration as being fit for human use." Now, isn't that is just amazing?
My take: if you know how versatile Aquphor can be, I find this to be a good upgrade.

I cannot believe this product is sold on this site! Firstly it is sold in cheaper stores/supermarkets (US would call them drugstores I believe) for $6 Australian!! It tastes terrible and it did nothing for my lips. I bought it for surgery recovery when I was told my lips would take a beating and be swollen, dry to the point of peeling and flaking, and painful - this did nothing. I decided to give it another try after when lips had returned to their normal state, again it did nothing.

I bought this because I saw it in a magazine and said it had many uses. It was right! The little tube goes a long way. It's great on dry patches of skin. It's also great on blemishes. I put it on them before I go to bed and by morning they are almost gone. It feels greasy but it really isn't. Your skin will absorb it quickly. Next time I will be buying a bigger container of it because I love it so much!
